Betting won’t be easy in this year’s Melbourne Cup, as the majority of runners are overseas horses, which have never run here. On probability alone, we will likely see 1 or 2 overseas horses in the placings, so it may be a good idea to include one in your multiples.

With way too many unknown factors, this could be a really unpredictable result – which usually means big payouts if you can get it right. I will use what I consider to be the most important factors here, to give my tips for this year’s Melbourne Cup. Those are breeding, and weight, as these 2 factors usually give advantage here.

22. TULLAMORE
Fixed Odds: $26.00 WIN $7.25 PLACE
My top pick and personal favourite, which I have followed leading up to this, showing improvement over extending distance. This 5 year old gelding is son of Savabeel, and grandson of Zabeel, which is great breeding for this. He ran on well finishing 2nd to Americain in Moonee Valley Drake International Cup, SWP-G2 2500m (Oct 22), and produced a fine run finishing 3rd, 2 lengths behind Southern Speed in the Caulfield Cup. Another plus is the jockey Chris Munce, who rode sire Savabeel to his two Group1 wins. Tullamore runs 5 kilos lighter than his last run against favourite Americain – big advantage, should be like lifting the chocks off a rocket!
21. THE VERMINATOR
Fixed Odds: $101.00 WIN $26.00 PLACE
5 year old gelding by Jeune, was very consistent until previous run in the Mackinnon Stakes WFA-Group1 2000m – settled at the back and laboured under the additional weight (59kg). Down to 52kg for this, could extend real well like Jeune (won Melbourne Cup 1994). Great value, currently at fixed odds of $101 for the win!

Fixed Odds: $26.00 WIN $7.25 PLACE
My pick of the overseas runners. 5 year old gelding by Dubawi, has been putting in good consistent runs in Britain, decent times over this distance, and drops 7 kilos in weight.
