Melbourne Cup time again, the race that stops the nation. Though G Network Racing Selections have been few the last year or so, I will post some Melbourne Cup Picks as is customary this season.

The favourites look quite strong this year in runners VIEWED (last year’s winner), ROMAN EMPEROR, and ALCOPOP all coming into this with some striking leadup runs. These runners must be respected here, and may be included in your multiples.

There are however, 3 other runners in the field, that look like excellent prospects, and will be this year’s G Network Selections for the Melbourne Cup – all longshots, and all worthy of a bet. Recommended to bet all 3, Win and Place.

7. ISTA KAREEM – Fixed Odds: $101.00W $26.00P
Bet: 1 unit Win, 5 units Place
This horse is used to the long distance, like a walk in the park. Flemington is not his best track, but dropping 6 kilos in weight on what he normally rides at, makes Ista Kareem a decent chance to be in the finish at long odds.

8. CRIME SCENE – Fixed Odds: $51.00W $13.50P
Bet: 1 unit Win, 5 units Place
In my opinion, best of the overseas horses, never run at Flemington, dropping 5 kilos will give this one a chance here.

19. CAPECOVER – Fixed Odds: $101.00W $26.00P
Bet: 1 unit Win, 5 units Place
Loves the Flemington track, has had some good runs in quality fields, and drops 7 kilos in weight on recent runs, Capecover is probably the best of the longshots to feature in this event.

Including one or more of these longshots in your multiples – Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta, or First 4 – could yield stellar payouts too!

Caulfield Cup Day 2009 presents another motley crew of runners, with some possible surprises. The day’s G Network Selection tip will be in the Caulfield Cup itself, as most races don’t look so good for betting. The Group1 BMW Caulfield Cup run over 2400 metres is seen as a main lead up to the big one, the Melbourne Cup Group1 3200m – the champion event of Australian Horse Racing.

The following runner has proven in all conditions and tracks, and a model of consistency of late – one of the best picks here. Paying well over the odds on TAB NSW Fixed odds, everything looks good, and it’s the only suggested bet of the day.

Its that time of the year again, as all who share an interest in horse racing watch the lead ups to the Melbourne Cup. Saturday 4 October presents feature races, the Epsom Handicap at Randwick, and the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. These will be the races of most interest, and looking at the fields, the multiples payouts may be quite decent if you can pick them.

Epsom Handicap 3YO+ Group1 1600m

A huge field with many good chances, there is one classy runner finding his peak, and worthy of a bet, Mentality. Mentality, has been running well and looks the goods, down in weight, and should finish off strongly. Other good chances are Theseo, a big down in weight, but may find the wide barrier a disadvantage, and at huge odds Spy Zaim($51W) may make an appearance.

Turnbull Stakes 4YO+ 2000m

Another runner worthy of a bet is Pompeii Ruler. This horse has proven time and again in these conditions, is running at his peak of fitness, and has won 3 from 3 races at Flemington. Pompeii Ruler could embarass this lot if he runs to his best form, very hard to beat. Weekend Hussler the odds on favourite, starts from a wide barrier, has yet to run this distance, but was staying just in front of Pompeii Ruler last start, in the Caulfield Underwood Stakes 1800m. I’ve a feeling the last 200m of this race may tell another story. Other chances Zarita($26W), Efficient($35W), and Zipping($61W) all represent excellent value, and all have a decent chance at upsetting favourite backers in the Turnbull Stakes.

Emirates Stakes day

Fine race day Flemington, may produce a nice trifecta or two late afternoon, Race 6 Emirates Stakes, and Race 9 Emirates Airline Handicap in particular.
The focus of the day is the Group1 Emirates Stakes at 3pm, featuring star spring runner Desert War who has really put in the strides this campaign. 2 wins, 3 places from 6 runs including last week’s convincing win in the Mackinnon Stakes, beating Growl and Aqua D’Amore in a driving finish to the line. Gets up and going well in front and never tires, he is the one to beat, currently favourite on NSW Fixed odds $4.40W $1.85P.
There are a few potential challengers here, but the one settled on as best chance to crack the favourite, or come close to, is Spirit Of Tara. Most recent rides have not suited, today’s conditions, weight, barrier however do suit, and loves 1600 metres to boot!

Spirit Of Tara in today’s Emirates Stakes has conditions to suit, and just may be best suited challenger to deserving favourite Desert War ($4.40W $1.85P NSW Fixed).

Only 52kg to handle, coming out of barrier 3 with jockey D Gauci aboard, Spirit Of Tara always seems to find the line well to 1600m in this class, with similar times to the best here. May just run on sweetly today with the weight advantage.

Well its that time of the year again, Caulfield Cup. This years Group1 event, features 18 runners, going 2400 metres in a quest for champion stayer stardom.

There are many chances here, with the early G Network favourite, Our Smoking Joe seeing a plunge in odds during the week, down to around $5.50 – $6.00 the win. This is too short considering the other chances.

One of the overlooked runners, is a real chance, and at odds too! Aqua D’Amore has led up to this really nicely, down in weight, and goes great the distance from inside barrier. Paying beautiful odds.

Most of the other favoured runners are a chance. Sphenophyta, Growl, look great. Even Grand Zulu with a light weight is a good chance at longer odds, currently $31.00win $8.50place.

This horse Aqua D’Amore has been the “quiet achiever” for some time now, always featuring strongly with the likes of Eremein, Our Smoking Joe, Sphenophyta and such, and fighting on gamely to the end and finishing just behind them.

Down to 52kg weight, will make quite a difference, and barrier 4 will hopefully provide an easy ride for jockey S Baster, we may just see Aqua pouring down on them in the finish!

Looms as a major threat to the favoured runners.
